8-13 micron maps of the Trapezium region of the Orion Nebula

Abstract

The Trapezium region of the Orion Nebula has been mapped at 8.6, 10.1, 11.2, 12.2, and 13.1 $mu$ with an infrared array spectrometer. The 8--13 $mu$ spectral structure of the entire region is characterized by emission and absorption by silicate grains. The grain emission is most prominent in the vicinity of the Trapezium. Absorption by silicate grains is evident only in the Becklin-Neugebauer--Kleinmann-Low region. It is concluded that the most likely grain heating mechanism in the Ney-Allen sources is the absorption by the grains of L$alpha$ radiation resonantly trapped within the H ii region. (AIP)
