Utilities ending steam sales; users seek other sources

Users of utility-supplied steam say that efforts to convert them to other energy sources reflect the unprofitability of steam production. Utility spokesmen say the flight of users from downtown and centralized locations increases the imbedded costs to remaining customers and is making it necessary for utilities in 10 major cities to discontinue or curtail steam sales this past year. Options available to members of the International District Heating Association are limited to complaining, moving, conversion, and cooperating with each other and the local government to retain the service.
