Abstract

Over the past several years, the idea of applying automation and computer technology to the solution of transportation problems has been developed to the point of successful deployment. A current study funded by FHWA is evaluating Automated Highway System concepts involving the application of automation techniques to the operation of the private automobile. Candidate technologies, concepts, and implementation strategies for initial deployment in the 1990 to 2000 time frame are identified and evaluated.
