Abstract
Because the lipids in all biological membranes are arranged in the form of a bilayer, artificial lipid bilayers are excellent models for studying the dynamic structural organization of these molecules in membranes. Furthermore, the incorporation of purified membrane proteins into artificial bilayers allows the reconstitution of their function in a simplified system.
