Abstract
After over a century of electric traction, the virtual monopoly of the commutator motor is drawing to a close. Major advances in devices and techniques have made the application of polyphase induction motors to traction units a viable proposition. The authors describe how the use of pulse power converters in these units can improve the electrical performance even further.
