Abstract

It follows from the independent-particle picture of the nucleus that the cross section for the reaction ($d$, $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$) depends upon the target mass number $A$ as $\ensuremath{\sim}{A}^{\ensuremath{-}3.33}$, indicating the significance of a recent empirical observation. The energy-integrated cross sections for emission of $p$, $d$, $^{3}\mathrm{H}$, $^{3}\mathrm{He}$, and $^{4}\mathrm{He}$ from Mg, Ni, and Ag nuclei bombarded by a 235-MeV pion beam show some features suggestive of nuclear structure.
