Abstract

A new model of the chromosphere containing spicules was constructed from 8.6- and 4.3-mm wavelength data. In this model the spicules are cylindrical (1500 km in diameter) with their bases at the photosphere and their heights ranging from 3000 to 18000 km. The number of spicules decreases rapidly with increasing height, and the spicules are distributed in angle about the predominant radial direction The interspicule gas is hot, and the spicule gas is cool; the spicule temperature deduced from the millimeter wave-length observations is 6400 K.
