Studies of Solvent Extraction of Nitric Acid in Water by the System Tri-n-Butyl Phosphate–CCl4

Abstract

The equilibrium relationship in the system of HNO3–H2O–TBP–CCl4 was studied. The extraction was carried out at 25°C with TBP solution in CCl4 whose TBP concentration was kept below 10 vol%.Conventional distribution measurements of nitric acid and water were carried out in addition to the measurement of infrared absorption spectra of the organic phase. The organic phase is presumed to be composed of TBP, TBP·H2O and nTBP·HNO3·xH2O. With regard to the extracted species containing nitric acid, the composition and the aggregation number were determined. They are(TBP·HNO3)2and the apparent equilibrium constant of extraction wasK′=0.74.
