We suggest that, if the local density of intergalactic dust is as high as has been suggested by some authors, suitable extragalactic X-ray sources should have scattered haloes comparable with those now being detected around Galactic X-ray sources. The results of a search for such haloes could provide useful model-independent constraints on the amount and origin of intergalactic dust.
