Samples of scallops were collected from 43 stations in the North Irish Sea so that the effect of depth, population density and sediment type on their Lmax could be investigated. The greatest Lmax is attained where there is least mud in the sediment and where the population density is lowest, Lmax is not affected by the depth of water over the beds.
