The advanced practice role in gastrointestinal nursing

Abstract

The question has been raised ′What is advanced nursing practice in gastrointestinal nursing?′ This article provides the background to advanced nursing practice in relation to Agenda for Change (Department of Health (DH), 2004a) and Modernizing Nursing Careers (DH, 2006a). It defines advanced practice and describes the role, educational preparation and domains of practice and competencies (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2005) related to advanced nursing practice in the UK. Case studies highlight the role of the advanced nurse practitioner in gastrointestinal nursing. This article concludes by considering the profession of advanced practice nursing and its expanding role.
