Abstract

In the past important differences have been found in the saturation flows in China and The Netherlands. Chinese saturation flow rates appeared to be 20 to 30% lower than the ones in The Netherlands. In order to confirm these conclusions, the methods for the estimation of saturation flow rates and other characteristics of flows at signalized intersections are compared. The regression method appears to give the most informative results, while headways give very detailed information but don't give an unbiased estimation of the saturation flow rate. The third method, the product limit method, uses also the information of unsaturated flow conditions and can give a direct estimation of the probability distribution of saturation flow rates and other characteristics.
