Abstract
The statistical mechanics of a new shell ensemble, which is the adiabatic counterpart of the grand canonical ensemble, is developed through its analogy to the microcanonical ensemble and to the isoenthalpic ensemble. The important particle fluctuation formula that is characteristic of the ensemble is derived.
