Abstract

ROMANSE is centred on the practical development of advanced telematics to service the wider transport objectives of the city region of Southampton. These objectives include the efficient management of the network and a reduction in congestion. In this context, the need to halt and reverse the increase in car usage is seen as essential to achieving an effective and environmentally sustainable transport system. The basis for achieving these objectives in ROMANSE is by the development of an integrated information and control system which operates in real time. It is considered that accurate and timely travel information from the Traffic and Travel Information Centre (TTIC) will influence travel behaviour, increase the use of public transport, maximise the efficiency of the transport system and provide high quality information for use in strategic policy decisions. Behaviour changes will include decisions as to whether or not a trip should be made, the mode used, the timing of the trip, the destination and the route taken. >
