In addition to Laminaria saccharina, plants fitting B⊘rgesen's description of L. faeroensis, with hollow stipes, occurred in Shetland. Relative to the frond, the stipe length of L. saccharina increased with shelter; hollow stipes were even longer, were inflated and occurred only in extreme shelter. There is no justification for calling the hollow stiped specimens L. faeroensis and the situation seems best explained by postulating a genetic but not specific difference.
