Abstract
Semisolid A356-Sc alloy slurry is prepared by low superheat pouring. The effects of Sc on microstructure in semisolid A356 alloy are researched. The results indicate that the slurry with particle- and rosette-like α-Al grains can be prepared by low superheat pouring. The size and morphology of the α-Al grain in the slurry are markedly improved by Sc. The refining mechanism of Sc on the morphology and size of the α-Al grain in semisolid A356 alloy is delved. The eutectic reaction of Al-Sc binary alloy provides the effective nuclei for formation of the α-Al grains in semisolid A356 alloy.
