Abstract

Mode conversion of v.l.f. radio waves in the Earth-ionosphere waveguide is considered. It is indicated that the transition distance Δd between day and night may be deduced, in a semiquantitative manner, from the observed fading characteristics. Values of Δd in the range 300–700 km are suggested.
