Abstract
This investigation was initiated to characterize the fractography of sulfide stress cracking (SSC). Fractography, defined as the descriptive treatment of fracture with specific reference to photography of the fracture surface, is used by metallurgists to characterize service failures of high strength steel. Fractography has shown that the environmentally sensitive embrittlement mechanisms (such as hydrogen embrittlement, stress corrosion cracking (SCC), liquid metal embrittlement, and corrosion fatigue) are characterized by the nucleation and propagation of brittle cracks.
