Abstract

We report on a prolonged case of a foreign body in the esophagus, which was overlooked more than one month. An 84 year old female complained of gradually increasing pain in swallowing and tenderness of the neck. Flexible fibro-optic esophagoscopy was the only medical examination which revealed a foreign body lodged in her esophagus. Direct esophagoscopy was performed, and the foreign body, a plum seed, was successfully removed.Esophageal foreign bodies present for prolonged periods can cause life-threatening complications. Clinicians therefore need to suspect the presence of a foreign body from the time of the first medical examination.
