Abstract
The calorigenic response to thyroxine and triiodothyronine has been compared in hypothyroid rats treated with either propylthiouracil or methimazole. Propylthiouracil reduced the calorigenic response to thyroxine, but methimazole did not. Neither methimazole nor propylthiouracil diminished the calorigenic response to triiodothyronine, and methimazole may even have increased this response when 80μg/day of triiodothyronine was administered. When methimazole was replaced by propylthiouracil in the diet of rats treated with thyroxine, the oxygen consumption fell slowly over a period of 2 weeks, but there was little rise in oxygen consumption during the 2 weeks after the diet was changed from propylthiouracil to methimazole.
