Spectra of A0620-00 taken in 1978, two and a half years after its outburst, show a stellar continuum of type K4–5 V and emission lines characteristic of an accretion disc. The Hβ emission was double with a peak-to-peak separation of 1200 km s−1 in 1978 January and 1080 km s−1 in March. The emission lines strengthened relative to the continuum between 1976 and 1978. The spectral type is confirmed by infrared (J, H, K) photometry. Spectra of a star positionally coincident with the radio transient associated with A1742-28 show it to be K3V. We suggest there is a class of X-ray transients consisting of a cool dwarf star and an accretion disc around an unseen companion, similar to the common model for dwarf novae.
