Abstract
Chinook salmon and striped bass in a canal with a total flow capacity of 5,000 c.f.s. are equally applicable for deflecting young steelhead in a canal with a maximum flow capacity of 100 c.f.s. The vertical louver facility was placed on a 20 degree angle, and the length of the louver line was 30 feet and the height 5 feet. The louver slats were installed with 1-inch clear spacing for the first 9 feet and at 0.5-inch clearance for the remaining, or uppermost, 3 feet of the downstream end. Conclusions: 1) application of louver principles proved successful, 2) a vertical louver installation was very effective, 3) physical conditions precluded an adequate trial of the efficiency of a horizontal louver installation.
