Abstract
Vast areas of tropical forest have been destroyed or degraded by uncontrolled fires since the late 1980s. Once fire enters a tropical forest, the chance for subsequent and more severe fire increases. This reality, combined with current land-use patterns, could transform the remaining rainforests into fire-prone, and thus unsustainable, ecosystems.
