The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of the soft salt [Ru(dtbubpy)3][Ir(ppy)2(CN)2]2 ([Ir][Ru][Ir]), composed of an anionic iridium complex and a cationic ruthenium complex, is presented. Light emission takes place exclusively from the ruthenium complex excited state, and is generated by annihilation between oxidized [Ir] and reduced [Ru]. This heterometallic system is anticipated to be attractive for the development of efficient and low-energy-cost ECL detection systems. For more details see the Full Paper by E. Zysman-Colman, Z. Ding et al. on page 7435 ff.
