Abstract
This paper presents a brief view of WiMAX technology. WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a wireless broadband technology, which supports point to multi-point (PMP) broadband wireless access. The term WiMAX has become synonymous with IEEE 802.16 Wireless MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) air Interface standard. WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access (BWA) up to 30 miles for fixed stations and 3 miles for mobile stations. In its original release the 802.16 standard addressed applications in licensed bands in the 10 to 66 GHz frequency range. Subsequent amendments have extended the 802.16 air interface standards to cover NLOS (Non-Line of Sight) application in licensed and unlicensed band from 2 to 11 GHz bands, filling the gap between wireless LANs (Local Area Network) and WAN (Wide area network). After all WiMAX is going to be the pioneering end of Wireless Communication Technologies. This Paper is divided into two parts. First part discusses about the trends in wireless technology. And second part gives an overview of the state-of-art research in applications of WiMAX in hospital and gives an outline of the challenges in designing WiMAX based systems for hospitals.
