Further analysis of a 'Complete Sample' in the Virgo Supercluster of galaxies

In the context of the Local (Virgo-centred) Supercluster of galaxies, a statistical study is made of the radio-derived properties for the 165 spiral and irregular galaxies in the recently published ‘Complete Sample’ by Fitt & Alexander. I find a trend for a larger neutral hydrogen mass in spiral galaxies located farther from the plane of the Local Supercluster (or smaller H I mass in spiral galaxies closer to the Local Supercluster plane). A previously known result, of a deficiency of H I mass in spiral galaxies located radially close to the centre of the Virgo cluster, is seen again in the ‘Complete Sample’. Contrary to some theoretical predictions, the magnetic field strength in spiral galaxies does not seem to be well correlated with the star-formation efficiency or the neutral hydrogen mass.
