The finding of pericholangitis in 35% of patients and primary sclerosing cholangitis in only 17% of patients follows from the retrospective design and histopathologic focus of their study. Of 107 patients with ulcerative colitis and available liver tissue for histologic study, 37 had pericholangitis but only 11 of these patients had cholangiographic studies to exclude primary sclerosing cholangitis.
