Abstract
Abstract The larva of Attacus ricini consumed 15.41 g and digested 11.81 g of the castor bean leaves during its whole period. Complete darkness stimulated the feeding mechanism of larvae under which it ingested a high amount of food. In the first and fifth instars, the highly rate of food intake has occurred at 16 and 20 hrs of light, but in the intervening instars, the high quantity of ingested food was recorded under the short‐day photoperiodic conditions. The digested food in the different instars has been also affected by the photo‐periodic regimes. The first three instars were a short‐day type. However, the first instar, digested food efficiently also at 20 hrs of light. In the fourth instar, food was highly digested under 12 and 16 hrs. In the fifth one the high digestibility was recorded at continuous illumination. The larvae have more efficiently converted the digestible food into body matter when been reared in the first and fifth instars under the short‐day photo‐periodic conditions, however, in the intervening instars, the larvae were of long‐day photo‐periodic type. To facilitate the rearing technique of this insect at the optimum photo‐periodic conditions, it is advised to expose the larvae to 20 hrs of light in the first four instars and to 8 hrs of light in the fifth one.
