In August 1996 a paper was published in the journal Science announcing the apparent discovery, in a meteorite, of a primitive fossilized Martian life form (McKay et al. 1996). The implication of the observations is that there was once life on Mars. Here we outline the background to the study, the evidence presented by the NASA team, and possible alternative explanations for their observations.
