Screening Sugarcane Populations for Cold Tolerance by Artificial Freezing1

J. E. Irvine

Open publisher page 5 citations

Abstract

Results of artificial freezing of young, potted sugarcane plants for 6 hours at —3 C were similar to field experience when plants were preconditioned in an unheated greenhouse. Precision control of freezer temperatures permitted the detection of levels of cold tolerance in the progeny of two cold tolerant parents. The method has been adapted to routine screening of seedlings for cold tolerance.
