Abstract
The placement of a percutaneous nephrostomy tube or ureteral stent is still the most widely used procedure in the treatment of urinary tract obstruction. Advances are being made in the design and method of delivery of ureteral stents. Permanent metallic stents are now being placed in obstructed ureters; their long-term patency rates compared with conventional stents remain to be seen. Criteria are also being established to determine which patients with malignant urinary tract obstruction will derive long-term benefit from endourologic intervention.
