Abstract

There are distinct structural difierences between the fibers of Gossypium barbadense and Gossypium hirsutum. The convolution angle is an especially important criterion. The differences in fiber structure are also expressed in the fiber properties. Strength and work of rupture appear to be higher for G. barbadense than for G. hirsutum. These differences in level continue to exist after mercerizing and reactant treating. In addition to these genetic differences, other differ ences resulting from environmental factors may occur within the species. Such differences may be reduced by means of mercerizing; however, to eliminate them completely is usually impossible.
