Abstract
The paper provides a comprehensive review of the development of self-starting synchronous motors with permanent-magnet excitation. Several new configurations of machine are described and their performance is demonstrated. Some important aspects of the performance are discussed. It is shown that the finite-element method of computing permanent-magnet fields, discussed in an earlier paper, gives an accurate prediction of performance.
