Why is Abstinence Necessary for the Recovery of Some Problem Drinkers?

Abstract

Summary Given a paradigm change in the alcoholism field from an irreversible disease to a reversible behavioural disorder, a new theoretical foundation for the abstinence requirement in treatment is needed. Such a foundation might consist of two classes of exceptional circumstances where abstinence is justified, one for permanent and the other for temporary abstinence.
