Abstract

Abstract Samarium(III) iodide reacts with samarium metal in tetrahydrofuran under mild conditions to afford samarium(II) iodide in almost quantitative yield. A solution of samarium(II) iodide in tetrahydrofuran is prepared from samarium metal and iodine.
