Evidence for beamed radiation from QSOs

Abstract

Deep radio-continuum detection observations have been performed with the VLA on a representative sample of optically and X-ray selected QSOs of low redshift. Eight of 27 objects were detected as radio-continuum sources with core luminosities down to 10 to the 21st W/Hz. A further 15 had higher detection limits. The detected radio-source structures are all small, probably one-sided, and complex. The optical properties of the objects indicate that the ratio of nuclear to host galaxy luminosity is about 5 times higher in the radio-emitting objects, and that their nuclear luminosities are about 10 times higher. These and related statistics are used to argue that the optical and radio-continuum emission from these quasars is beamed towards this Galaxy.
