Abstract

The breakdown properties of oil impregnated paper insulation are very significant at low temperature, especially around the freezing temperature of oil. We proposed a new insulating method for cryogenic cable insulated with the oil impregnated paper. The conductor of the cable we designed has a coolant channel inside and its electrical insulation is located between two thermal insulators to be kept at a certain temperature range (193 K - 233 K for dc cable 213 - 233 K for ac cable). As the oil is used in liquid phase, this type of cable should have no problem caused by the crack generated in the oil. This new type of cryogenic cable can be manufactured, transported and installed by means of the conventional-techniques for the OF cable. Optimum designs of the cable which make the total loss generated in the cable minimum are discussed and an economical evaluation of this cable is also reported.
