Library of Congress Classification Numbers as Subject Access Points in Computer-Based Retrieval

Subject retrieval by Library of Congress Classification numbers is examined from the perspective of five user groups of online catalogs. Although, at present, librarians are the user group most likely to benefit from the LC classification schedules as a tool for subject searching, there will be continued advances in the capabilities of online catalogs. Research on the use of the LC classification schedules as a component of subject retrieval should continue.
