Abstract

The shadowgraph method is a very useful visualization technique for fluid flows involving density variations. Usually, a quantitative recovery of the density field from the observed shadowgraph images is not possible; however, artificial shadowgraph images can be constructed if a numerical solution of the problem is available. A comparison of these images with the experimental ones helps to interpret the measurements and also leads to a better understanding of the shadowgraph method itself. By comparing the solution of the full shadowgraph equations with the result of a popular simplified evaluation, the applicability of the latter can be assessed. This procedure is applied to the convective flow in a water-filled square cavity that is heated and cooled from the sidewalls.
