Abstract
In response to an article by R.K. Raman in an earlier issue (”Controlling Algae in Water Supply Impoundments,” Journal AWWA, August, 1985), the authors of this letter‐to‐the‐editor state that Raman has failed to discuss the most important method for controlling algae in water supply reservoirs. According to the authors, this method is the limiting of phosphorus loadings to the reservoirs. The use of the Vollenweider‐OECD eutrophication modeling approach is suggested as a means of determining the amount of planktonic algal biomass reduction that will result from a given phosphorus load reduction. In his response to this letter, Raman agrees with the importance of nutrient control while reiterating internal regeneration as an important source of phosphorus loading.
