Abstract
The Historikerstreit, the German historians’ debate which spilled over into the national press in Germany, has often been characterized as a discussion of the importance of the Shoah in German history. In fact, the debate has been more about the very nature of modern German history and the role that history should play in the Bundesrepublik.
