Abstract
The reliability and validity of the profile method have been estimated. The results obtained from the profile method in this study have been used to indicate the accuracy of the assumption that the central part of the cornea is spherical (or meridionally circular). For all eyes measured, a significant deviation from constancy of curvature was found with the central corneal element shown to be shorter in radius than the radius indicated by keratometer findings. However, from the data presented, the central corneal curvature is spherical in the sense that its curvature was found to vary over a range less than 0.05 m.m. of radius.
