Abstract

A surface laser-light scattering (SLLS) apparatus for simultaneously measuring the surface tension and the viscosity has been applied to high-temperature melts. As the first step, in order to improve and evaluate the accuracy of the SLLS apparatus, the surface tension and viscosity of molten sodium chloride in the temperature range up to 1243 K were measured. Sodium chloride is one of the standard reference materials for thermophysical properties of high-temperature melts. The accuracies of the measured surface tension and viscosity were estimated to be within ±8.5% and ±12%, respectively. Surface tension and viscosity of molten lithium niobate were measured under an argon gas atmosphere in the temperature range 1543-1758 K.
