Abstract Two groups of apple varieties showing susceptibility to either internal breakdown or core flush were compared. No significant differences between groups existed in: (1) cell volume in the mid‐cortex, (2) cell volume in the mid‐pith, and (3) the ratio of cell volume in the midcortex to that in the mid‐pith. Cell size was generally greater in the pith than in the cortex, and this was primarily due to larger radial diameter of pith cells.
