An Analysis of Employment Pattern of Service Sector in India

India's service sector is the fastest growing sector. It has grown rapidly as a consequence of the adoption of the New Economic Policy (NEP) of 1991. It contributes significantly to GDP, GDP growth, employment and trade. Domestic demand for services has increased as incomes have risen, triggering the expansion of industries such as banking, education, and telecommunications. This sector continues to be a star performer and by contributing 59 per cent of GDP, it is enjoying first place among all sectors in Indian economy. In employment providing, this sector is occupying second place, next only to agriculture. The present paper makes an analysis of Indian services sector through examining its growth and contributions in the economy. The paper also tries to analyze employment pattern in service sector along with its sub-sectors.
