Abstract
Xylitol is a fermentation product of xylose which can be used as a sweetener sugar substitute by diabetics. Five novel Kluyveromyces marxianus yeast strains, IMB1 IMB5, have shown the ability to grow on xylose and produce xylitol. In comparison to chemical synthetic xylitol production, the biotechnological production method can be more cost effective, since no expensive metal catalysts and high temperatures are needed. All five yeast strains of K. marxianus IMB were tested at five different temperatures ranging from 25C to 45C with xylose as sole carbon source. IMB4 showed highest growth rate of 0.20 h-1 at 40C while IMB2 produced the highest xylitol concentration at 40C with a value of 7.84 g/l (YX/X = 0.42). IMB1 produced the highest ethanol concentration of 1.64 g/l (YE/X = 0.08) at 40C.
