Abstract
The frequencies of the three chromosomal genotypes St/St, St/B11, and B11/B11 in Chironomus plumosus L. in larval populations from Lake Tystrup kept in the laboratory at 10d̀C and anoxia were compared with the frequencies in a parallel control in aerated water at 10d̀C, and with the frequencies under natural conditions in Lake Tystrup. The experiments showed that under anoxia the heterokaryotypes (St/B11) had a lower mortality than either homokaryotype. Such a differential mortality is discussed as an explanation of the observed excess of the heterokaryotype (St/B11) in certain natural populations of Chironomus plumosus from lakes or parts of lakes with periods of anoxia and stagnation.
