Summary When the existence of an amenity woodland is threatened by a developer or farmer, it is difficult to confront the stark economics of such a step with an objective defence of the woodland based on its amenity value. A possible solution is a recognised and accepted system of evaluation which would standardise the recognition of the worth of amenity woodland. The main purpose of this paper is to present for discussion a woodland ranking system. It suggests the salient elements which form a woodland's amenity value and proposes a method for comparing them with others. Current woodland evaluation methods are reviewed and the development of a Woodland Ranking System from previous systems, is described. It concludes by acknowledging the omissions in the system and by making suggestions for its further development.
