Abstract
Electron densities in the F region above Antarctica vary with universal time. Similar, but weaker, behavior is found above the Arctic. In both hemispheres maximum electron densities occur close to the time of local noon at the geomagnetic pole. Some evidence suggests that during equinox negative ions are produced by proton bombardment and subsequently are detached by sunlight.
