Abstract
In an attempt to improve the energy efficiency of a building, the impact of floor glazing was assessed. The floors of a 3-story scale model were constructed of either partial (perimeter) glazing, full glazing or no glazing. Results indicated that the amount of illumination transmitted from one floor to the adjacent floor was a function of the amount of glazing. They also indicated that even partial glazing (along the perimeter) results in significant illumination to adjacent floors (as much as a 16.5% increase). Both direct and indirect (reflected) illumination via partially glazed floors occurred, the latter being quantitatively less but still significant. Thus, partial (perimeter) glazing for multiple floors should be considered another means of increasing the energy efficiency of small structures.
